JOBS
(79 WORD TO PRACTICE)

About the Topic: Jobs

A job is the work a person does to earn money and help people. Everyone has different jobs, and every job is important. Learning job vocabulary helps students talk about what people do and what they want to be when they grow up.

There are many kinds of jobs. Some people work in schools, like teachers. Some work in hospitals, like doctors and nurses. Some people work in stores, like shop assistants, or drive buses and trains. Other jobs include police officers, firefighters, farmers, chefs, and engineers.

Jobs can be full-time or part-time, and some people work at home or in offices. Talking about jobs helps students understand the world of work, describe people, and express their dreams for the future. For example:

  • “I want to be a doctor.”

  • “My father is a teacher.”

Learning job vocabulary also helps students ask questions and give answers about occupations in English.

Sample Vocabulary

  • Teacher

  • Doctor

  • Nurse

  • Farmer

After learning this topic, students will be able to:

  1. Name common jobs in English.

  2. Describe what people do at work using simple sentences.

  3. Ask and answer questions about jobs (e.g., “What is your father?”).

  4. Talk about their own dreams for future jobs.

  5. Improve speaking, listening, and writing skills through job-related activities.

Benefits of the BoomWords Game

The BoomWords Game makes learning job vocabulary fun and interactive. The teacher says the topic “Jobs,” and students take turns saying one job: “teacher,” “doctor,” “chef,” “driver,” etc. If a student repeats a word or cannot think of one, they say “Boom!” and sit down.

This game helps students:

  • Remember jobs and occupations quickly.

  • Practice pronunciation and speaking fluency.

  • Listen carefully to their classmates.

  • Enjoy active and playful learning in class.

Teachers can also show pictures of people at work, mime job activities, or ask students to guess the job from actions — for example, pretending to write on a board, cook, or drive a car.
