About the Topic: Conjunctions (Intermediate Level)

Conjunctions are words that connect ideas, sentences, or parts of a sentence. They help us make our writing and speaking smoother, more logical, and easier to understand. Without conjunctions, our sentences would sound short and disconnected.

There are three main types of conjunctions:

  1. Coordinating conjunctions – These join two equal ideas. Examples: and, but, or, so, for, nor, yet.

    • Example: I wanted to go out, but it started to rain.

  2. Subordinating conjunctions – These connect a main clause with a dependent one. Examples: because, although, if, when, since, while, unless.

    • Example: I stayed home because I was tired.

  3. Correlative conjunctions – These work in pairs. Examples: either…or, neither…nor, both…and, not only…but also.

    • Example: She is both smart and kind.

Learning conjunctions helps students write longer, more natural sentences and express relationships between ideas such as cause, contrast, time, and condition.

Benefits of the BoomWords Game

The BoomWords Game makes grammar practice active and fun! The teacher says “Conjunctions!” and students take turns saying one — “and,” “but,” “because,” etc. If someone repeats a word or hesitates too long, they say “Boom!” and leave the circle.

For intermediate students, the teacher can make it more challenging:

  • Students must use the conjunction in a complete sentence.

  • Example: “I like coffee and tea.”

  • This helps them think quickly, practice sentence building, and use grammar naturally.

The BoomWords game transforms what could be a dry grammar topic into an exciting, dynamic speaking activity that builds both accuracy and fluency.

Teacher’s Comment

“Students practiced using conjunctions in real sentences today. They worked well in pairs and made creative examples like ‘I went to bed early because I was tired.’ The BoomWords game helped them remember conjunctions faster and use them confidently in speech.”

Student’s Comment

“I understand conjunctions much better now. Before, I only used ‘and’ or ‘but,’ but now I can use words like ‘although’ and ‘because’ in my sentences. The BoomWords game made grammar fun and helped me speak faster in English!”
